Timing Your Auction Sales For Profit

Show Guide...

There is the old saying that timing is everything and that couldn?t be more true than selling with Ebay. In this case, were talking about strategic timing - and in particular two critical factors in selling through an auction. The first is the length of the auction, and the second is timing when the auction will end. Let?s begin first with deciding how long an auction should run?

Typically, the first step in an auction that many sellers forget is timing the end of the auction to coincide with key selling days on Ebay. Your starting day determines your ending day and that is something you need to take into consideration when posting your auction.

Experts agree that a seven day auction is best. The primary reason for the longer auction is to attract more attention and viewers to what you are selling. Some might argue that a shorter auction is more appropriate for today?s short attention span buyer, but typically, a longer auction will gain more watchers and ultimately a higher selling price. In addition, a 7 day auction spans the entire week including the prime viewing weekend zone where traffic can increase dramatically. Typically, Sunday is considered the best day to end an auction followed closed by Saturday and then Friday. Most sellers also agree that ending an auction on a holiday is a bad idea.

Perhaps thought the most important timing factor of an auction is the actual time that is does end. You should shoot for auctions that end between 10 and midnight Eastern US time. This makes it between 8 and 10 Mountain and 7 and 9 on the West coast. The Eastern sea board represents the greatest concentration of buyers and the period between 10 and 12 is the best solution to optimize their viewing ( and bidding ) while still being effective in the other time zones.

Have you ever been up at 3 or 4 in the morning and seen all the auctions closing - this is a great time to get bargai...

TIPS ON BUYING OLD OR USED BOOKS

Show Guide...

As a collector and dealer of scarce and antiquarian books, I am often put off by what I consider deceptive displays for books being offered. Very often "What You See Is What You Get" could not be further from the truth. I have decided to list some of the more obvious ploys used, in hopes of saving the sincere buyer from future disapointments. This information should help the sellers as well.

PHOTOGRAPHS:

(1) Cropping of photos: When a photo is trimmed or cut to size. Many books displayed cut off the tops and bottoms of the spine, or even all the books edges. It is just these areas that show the most wear on older books (chipping, frayiing, worn through or even missing parts). This can only lead one to think the seller is hiding damages that could prevent its sale. This is deceptive marketing!   See photos below: The first is cropped ~ The second is not. If the second photo had damage to spine you would not see it in first photo.

(2) Photographing the books cover in color, then switching to black and white for the inside pages. By using color it would show the natural browning and yellowing of pages due to age. By switching to black and white he can hide these true indicators of the books condition. Again, deceptive. (3) The color of a books cover will often fade with age. Many use photo enhancing software to add color tint to their photos giving a fresher and brighter color. They often use red and this can be seen in the rest of the photo having an unatural red tint. &...

Scam Watch - The Most Popular Scams on Ebay

Show Guide...

99% of the transactions on Ebay happen in good faith, and everything goes smoothly. But as in the real world, there is always someone willing to step outside of the rules to try and either save a buck or make more money off their items. Here are some of the most popular auction scams to watch out for.

Shill Bidding

This is a rather basic one where a seller uses other id?s or has friends raise the number of bids and value of an item. This has been going on for ever in car auctions where a ? shiller ? in the audience will bid against someone who is interested in a vehicle to drive the price up, and is just as popular with online auctions. Watch for recurring user id?s on a sellers bids or for sellers who routinely bid - but don?t win on each others auctions.

Bid Shielding

This one involves a ring of bidders who target an item they want and put in multiple bids. One for the price they want, and then a series of bids that inflate the item to scare off any other bidders. Moments before the bidding ends, the high bidders retract their bids and the low bid wins the auction. Watch for bidders who have a history of retracting bids.

Switch and Return

Some dishonest buyers will purchase your item, receive it and then return it.   The scam: The item they return is not yours but theirs and is an attempt to upgrade their item for free at your expense. Watch for bidders who are overly interested in your return policy.

Fakes and Reproductions

It?s a mistake to think that a certificate of authenticity is proof that an item is real. Think about it, if a seller is willing to misrepresent a fake item as real, then what is the big deal of throwing in an authentic looking certi...

Attracting More Traffic to Your Ebay Listing

Show Guide...

Have you ever wondered why some auctions get hundreds of visitors while yours only gets 12 ?

The secret is in the keywords used to promote the website and how they relate to the buyers search query and the difference between selling your product for next to nothing and receiving top dollar for your auction.

Let me tell you how we discovered the power of this strategy. Our firm began selling website businesses on ebay but despite offering superior designs, better base products and lower reserves, our sites were selling for a fraction of what other sites in our category was selling for. For example, our site with a superior design would sell for $75 while a similar site would sell with less features would sell for $600. Being the type of person who gets really frustrated as to why this was happening, I began investigating the other sellers who were selling for so much money compared to ours.

The first obvious difference was the traffic to their site. They were getting 900 people in a 7 day auction, while we were getting 60 in the same period. So with this in mind, I began searching for their strategy to achieve so much more traffic.

I scoured their site, and all of ebay. Had they found a secret category that could get them a lot more traffic then the ones I was using I wondered ?

About the same time, our firm was launching a new service called the SE tool box, which analyzes web pages and reports back to you what the search engines see when they visit the site. The report includes meta tags and key words.

Then it occurred to me that ebay relies heavily on their own search engine to help buyers find products. In fact I read the 80% of all buyers use the basic search tool to find their listing. So I thought, What would happen if I ran my spyder against the site that my competitor has sold for so much more than I was selling for.

Margin Killers - The Frustration of Ebay

Show Guide...

Margin Killers - The Scourge of Ebay

Have you ever wondered why some fellow sellers on ebay sell their products for next to zero margins ?

Here is how it goes. You find a great product, and are excited about the profit potential marketing it on ebay only to find out that some knucklehead is selling it for 25 cents over cost rather than the $10 profit they could be getting.

Although frustrating, it certainly is not a new phenomenon in the retail market place. Grocery stores have been doing this to themselves for years with milk, bread and seasonal items such as turkeys and hams. They price them so low that they in many cases are losing money in an effort to attract customers of which they hope they will earn more money from in the future.

But what about the ebay seller who takes a digital information product or software title and starts selling it for 99 cents rather than the 29.99 suggested retail.

The first and most important rule of the free market system is that competition will drive prices down. That is why the oil and gas industry formed an association ( OPEC ) to control the prices which in the long term ensured maximum profitability from the product and prevented any one country from selling gas too cheaply.

Understanding this principle about the market system and subsequently ebay goes a long way to maximizing your profit from your auctions. Obviously if you are going to compete in a market of slashed margins, you need to have your house in order.

Start by analyzing the sellers auction including his sales history and what types of products they are selling. Is there a catch to what they are selling such as a cheap website but a hosting contract is required ?

Some sites sell products for very low simply to obtain a qualified email address which they know ca...

Mature Audience Listings under Everything Else

Show Guide...

I want to help people who have a legitimate item for sale to sell their item with minimum hassle. To avoid some of the traps about listing an x-rated item please follow these suggestions.

Ebay does not make this catagory easy for people to use!or find!

If you are having difficulty listing an item under the above catagory try these solutions: Follow to the letter all instructions on listing your item under the Everything Else/Mature Audience guidelines help page.

First of all know that anyone wanting to list or buy or browse the adult content site will have to submit credit card verificaton, so the site staff will know that they are 18 or over before a sale is transacted.

No pictures of sexual acts, with body parts especially.

No words that pertain to a sex act even if it is in the Title re: Hardcore, XX, XXX. Only ONE "X" is allowed in the description. Derriere might be acceptable if used correctly for example, (but) the common name of the body part is not,so maybe use the word "but" with just one "t". Sometimes you have to play with spelling or words, and sometimes even that won't wash.If you want to use the box picture but the pic is too graphic, or the title is too graphic, then I suggest covering up the un-acceptable part on the box  with a piece of paper, or masking tape, then take the pic.

You cannot block/screen the un-acceptable parts with an editorial mask.

Even if your picture is okay, remember that in the description you cannot use those words either!

Talk to the "Help" staff before listing to find out beforehand what will and will not be allowed pertaining to your listing. Send them a copy of your ad and ask if it is okay before listing it.If you still can...

EBay SHIPPING TIPS AND TRICKS for Buyers and Sellers

Show Guide...

USPS Rates and Fees have increased across the board. For on-line transactions to be cost effective for buyers and sellers, it is important for both to educate themselves about shipping issues.

USPS has not only raised their rates, but also has changed the method of computing those rates.  In order to streamline their operation, USPS is placing their emphasis on the shape and size of packages, and machinability, rather than weight as was previously the main criteria. Uniformity is necessary so the automated scanning and processing machines can be used to the fullest, and to reduce the need for human intervention in the shipping process. USPS has also restructured International Mail prices and renamed their products to be comparable to domestic ones-  for the first time in more than five years, resulting in an average increase of 13 percent. The price adjustment for First-Class Mail International averages 8.6 percent. The cost to mail a letter to Canada or Mexico has change from 63 cents to 69 cents.

How does this affect domestic buyers? Knowledge is power. Knowing how the fees are structured will help you to spot excessive shipping and handling charges, and to gauge what is reasonable and fair.  Since I mainly sell books, it is easiest for me to illustrate the changes using a book as an example. Before the May 14th changes, a book weighing less than 1 pound could be shipped by USPS Media Mail for $1.64 (including delivery confirmation $0.65) for a total of $2.19.  A book weighing between 1 and 2 pounds cost $2.67, and a big box of books weighing 5 pounds could be mailed for $4.11! Here is a comparative chart of how the shipping rates changed.

M I Hummel Figurines - An Easy To Use Collector's Guide

Show Guide...

Introduction

I put alot of effort and time into this guide, please take the time to scroll to the bottom and click on "guide was helpful" or "guide was not helpful".

Let me start by saying I have invested many years into researching, buying, selling and collecting these adorable figurines.  In the past I have used newspapers, live auctions, yard sales and word of mouth to seek out items for my collection.  Ebay has opened a whole new avenue for collectors with thousands of M I Hummel items available everyday.  As with any collectable item, the collector needs a buying guide or reference to make informed buying decisions.  I have tried to compile a small part of the Hummel history, a brief look into trademarks and a quick lesson on collecting and eBay shopping into this guide.  I hope you will print this guide and keep it handy while shopping at eBay.

The History of M I Hummel Figurines

Drawings by Sister Maria Innocentia - Figurine #85 "Serenade"

M I hummel figurines were created by a warm, simple Bavarian girl whose name was Berta Hummel.  Berta gained her artistic direction at an early age from the Institute of English Sisters.  In 1931 Berta entered the covent of Siessen at Saulgua.  Two years later she was ordained Sister Maria Innocentia.  In 1933 sketches of ...

why I like to be the first to bid......and to bid early

Show Guide...

I have heard it a thousand times that the best way to get a bargain is to wait until the last minute to bid on an item. I can see a lot of merit in doing that and have seen good reasons to do that. I use a completely different process. I like to visit my favorite searches and look for the newest listings and I want to be the first to bid on an item. Lets say I am looking at a coin I would gladly give 20.00 for and it is listed with starting bid price of .99 ---- I bid with my maximum bid of 20.00 and am high bidder at the .99 cents (ebay only uses as much of your bid as necessary to win the item up to your maximum bid.) Now a bit later another bidder comes along and bids maximum bid of 5.00 - he will get a notice that he is outbid and I am now the winner at 5.00. This bidder may bid another time say 6 or 7 dollars. I of course am still high bidder. Often a bidder like this is trying to get a bargain only and will go to easier picking. Say a bidder comes by and is serious and he bids 20.00 - he still loses because the first bidder is winner in a tie bid. Now you say that might be a good way to get an item at a fair price, but will I ever get a bargain that way.... I am a seller and I often put items on sale with a starting bid of a penny or .99 and the only reason for that is to try and iniate active bidding. I see that six days into the auction I have a dozen watchers but no bidders. The first thing that comes to my mind is that someone is going to bid a penny at the last minute and I will have to sell my item at a loss. I, like most people, don't like to lose money so I go and revise my item ( I can do that because there is no bids and that is legal) and change my starting price to what I really want the item to sell for. It is amazing how many of the watchers will go away. Now had someone bid the first day of auction, that person would have the opportunity to get a bargain. I would have my item sold at .01 or .99 and I would have to honor that...

Where To Look For Wholesalers & Distributors

Show Guide...

Where To Look For Wholesalers & Distributors

Ok, so you have decided you want to sell more regularly on eBay and are looking for a wholesaler. Well, let me clear a few things up. First, you are not going to have the good wholesalers given to you by anyone. Giving up your sources is the first no-no to being a business. If I gave my sources out to every person that wanted to know where I get my dice & how much I pay for them, I would be out of business in a week. The competition would become too fierce, the market too flooded, and no one would be making any money. Second, you will have to do some leg work. Third, do not get discouraged by dead ends. You are going to get these.

Now that you have your tax ID, business registration, start-up capital (no matter how much or little), etc, you now need to find a wholesaler. There are several places you can look for them. The most obvious would be a search engine. However, you are going to come across a lot that claim to be wholesalers but have retail style prices. Check their prices against what the products are going for on eBay. Also check completed listings to see how well things have sold in the recent past. Depending on what you are looking for, you might be able to come up with some really good ones and be done with your search.

Online Resources

If the basic search engine results do not appease you, then you might try checking through search engine directories. Google and Yahoo both have these directories but you really have to dig to find them. These can be a bit more resourceful depending on what you are looking for.

There are also several websites...

Is It Really A First Edition?

Show Guide...

For many people, the question of whether a book is a first edition or not is very important. To collectors it makes a big difference, and the value of a book that is a first edition is quite different from that of a later reprint or book club edition. Yet, I see many books sold as first editions that obviously are not. Granted, it can sometimes be difficult to determine the publication status of some books (there are whole books written on the subject), but here are a few things that might help most of the time.

  • NOT FIRST EDITIONS:

Reprint houses like A. L. Burt and Grosset & Dunlap are almost never first editions. In many cases they just copied the originals, sometimes even copying the "First Edition" statement of the original publisher. Grosset & Dunlap printed thousands of books, and apart from some early childrens' series books, are 99.9% reprints.

Book Club editions are not first editions, and are not always clearly identified as book club editions. Often they have a small printed or blindstamped device on the back lower corner of the book cover. This can be a small dot, circle, square, or other figure.

Book Club books almost never have a price on the dust jacket. So if you pick up a book, open it, and there is no price on the inside dust jacket flap, you can just about bet it is a book club edition. A very current example of this is THE DA VINCI CODE which has been so popular over the last few years, with first editions often selling for as much as $100: The book club edition looks almost exactly the same, is not identified as a book club book, says First Edition, and has a printing line of numbers on the copyright page from 1-10, just like the real first edition, but the book is about an inch smaller in siz...

Selling Beatle Records - Top Seller Mistakes

Based on my personal experience and in talking with other Beatle collectors, I decided to detail out the top mistakes sellers make when attempting to sell Beatle vinyl on eBay. If I missed anything, please feel free to email me.

  1. Not Showing Labels: By far the biggest mistake (and frankly the most annoying) a seller makes when selling Beatle records. The labels on Beatle records are of paramount importance to a collector. They are not all equal! Always show a large clear scan or picture of the record label.
  2. Not Using Goldmine Grading System: Even if selling records is not your primary thing on eBay, take the time to learn the Goldmine grading system or tap someone who is versed in the standard to help you grade your records. Statements in descriptions like "it looks good to me" are a huge turn-off to potential buyers.
  3. No Shipping & Handling in the Item Description: By not stating the S&H you are forcing the potential buyer to contact you. A major hassle (trust me on this one). State the S&H in your description or use the shipping calculator.
  4. Overstating Shipping & Handling: You might as well add to your description in large bold print "I am looking to rip you off". I se...

Never know how to figure out how many quilt squares to purchase for your quilt project?  New at quilting?  A common mistake with new quilters is this:  ONE set of 40 4" squares will not make a quilt!  The following instructions include how to figure out how many squares you need for a quilt with a border and a pre-counted guide for quilts without a border.

Instructions for figuring how many squares you will need

    1. Figure out the measurements you want for your completed quilt.  For new quilters, drawing a large box on a piece of paper helps!  For these directions lets say that you are making a lap size quilt that is 45x60 inches.

    2. Will you be putting a border on your quilt?  Draw another box inside of your beginning box.  If you will be making a quilt with 2 borders, draw another box inside the second box.  I recommend a quilt with a border because you won't have to deal with all the seam allowances from the squares when you put your binding on.

    3. Mark your measurements inside each box going vertically and horizontally.  For instance, your first border is 4 inches, your second border is 3 inches.  Most people make the mistake of counting only 7 inches for the border.  BUT, you have 7 inches on both sides which would total 14 inches.  So a quilt that is 45x60 is now 45" minus 14" by 60" minus 14", which leaves 31" x 46" area for your squares.

    4. If you are purchasing 4" squares and use a 1/4 inch seam allowance, you...

I am writing to explain what a deeded interval ownership timeshare is and what the difference is between types of timeshares people are selleing these days. I hope this guide helps everyone out there decide which is best for them when they purchase their vacation.

As an old timeshare salesman from when it was big I have done alot of research about what I sold. From what I understand there are many types of timeshares out there such as deeded , lease and the points system. The two I am going to talk about are the two most popular, deeded and lease. Hopefully I can explain what the differences are and can help you decide.

When taking a vacation there are several ways to go. You can go stay with family but family is like fish, after a couple of days they start stinking. You can go camping in a tent (yuck) or a camper but you then have to pay for the campsite, gas and not to mention the camper. Let me tell you I have done the camper thing and it is great for the first year but then when the camper sits in the yard during the off season you are still making $300.00 a month payments. At the end of several years you have all of the memories you created during your vacations and you have a $30,000.00 camper that is worth $4,000. BEEN THERE DONE THAT.

The second way is staying in a hotel. You have different places to go and you don't spend any money until you actually go on vacation. The bad things are this...............

        (1) When the Days Inn opened in the 1960s it was called the 7 Days Inn because it was only $7 per night. The same hotel now is around $160.00 per night. Say the avarage price of a room right now is $80.00 per night. You stay for the week, that is $560.00. For the $560.00 you a room, thats it 1 room with two beds and a bathroom. Pretty crammend for a family. Lets say you vacation for 10 years and the price of the hotel never goes up (which is crazy) . At the end of ...

Finding and Working With WHOLESALERS and DROPSHIPPERS

Wholesaler = A business that will sell products to you substantially below the retail price, and without charging you sales tax.

Dropshipper = A business (normally a wholesaler) who will ship products directly to your buyer, allowing you to eliminate the cost of reshipping the product from your location to your buyer. Most will label the products under your name and your buyer will never know you used a dropshipper.

        *************

Scan the Businesses for Sale section on eBay and you cannot help but see dozens, if not hundreds of ads selling access to Wholesalers who will sell to you for pennies so you can re-sell on eBay for dollars and get rich.  Others offer to "sell" their eBay business, which is allegedly earning $5,000 a week, for only $4.99 (plus shipping).

        Sound familiar?

The sad fact is that most of these ads are for the same, or very similar product.  A worn out CD listing of 10,000 supposed Wholesalers, most of whom have gone out of business, or at the very least allowed their websites to expire.  The sellers of this trash are hoping you will find enough "live" links on the disc that you won't feel completely ripped off and demand a full refund.

There are plenty of legitimate Wholesalers out there, waiting to do business with you, if you can find them.  What you should be looking for is a business that insists on you providing them with your State-issued Sales Tax Certificate.  This is the mark of a true Wholesaler.  They will sell to you, and without charging you State or Local sales tax, as long as you have a valid Certificate.  These are issued by your state, and generally are free to obtain (or at the most, cost $5-25).  Listing the Sales Tax collection office for each state is beyond the scope of this article...

How To Write An e-Bay Item Description Like A Pro

        Show Guide...

Hello And Thank You For Visiting My Personal Guide Page ! :0)

Plenty of eBay experts will tell you that you need to write an "energizing" and "motivating" description that will compel bidders to buy your item. I disagree. Writing "fluff" into your auction description places you in the category of the used car salesman. Write a factual listing with a thorough description of your item?s condition and maintain a good service record and you'll build confidence in your buyers that will result in lots of bids.

When describing your item, think like a potential buyer. Try to anticipate the questions that a buyer might ask about the item you are selling and build the answers into your listing.

A positive tone - Overall, the tone of your auction listing and your answers to even the most obvious of questions that you may receive should be a positive one and not negative. We've noticed that many sellers, even experienced eBay sellers, just don't understand the basics of selling in the marketplace. In their eBay auctions they place a list of demands and the buyer must either comply, or not bid.
