Reviews & GuidesWARNING About Cross Stitch Charts Sold On EBayThere is an issue which is really starting to make a horrendous impact on the designing industry - copyright infringement. Several sellers on EBay have already been censured, some have had their accounts suspended. IT IS ILLEGAL TO COPY A CHART AND SELL THE COPY. IT IS ILLEGAL TO USE A TRADEMARK OR COPYRIGHTED IMAGE WITHOUT THE OWNER'S PERMISSION. Period. If you are a buyer who has bid on or purchased a chart only to find that it is a copy of the original chart once it is received, you can take the following steps: 1. Contact EBay's Copyright Department IMMEDIATELY. If you paid for your purchase through PayPal, file a claim through them as well. If you get no results through PayPal or EBay, contact your credit card company and file a dispute. 2. Contact the original designer or publisher of the chart in question and lte them know you were sold an illegal copy of one of their designs; gather as much information about the seller as possible to forward to the owner of the copyrighted work. If you are a buyer who has bid on or purchased a chart which is an illegal porttrayal of a copyrighted work (Disney items, Warner Bros, Looney Tunes, etc...), you can contact the owner of the copyrighted image directly to pass the information about the seller on to them. Watch Out - Illegal Cross Stitch KitsArt of Disney Cross Stitch Kits are wonderful things. They
usually sell for $45 - $50, and are well worth the cost, as they can
only be purchased in Walt Disney World, come with all the bells and
whistles (beads and specialty yarns), and are huge, gorgeous frameable
designs once they're finished. There's one that shows Mickey
Mouse saluting in front of an American Flag, and one where Mickey is
shaking the hand of a fireman. The finished design for these are
10 3/4" x 15 1/4" and 16" x 20" respectively.

ALWAYS AN ADMIRER OF OUR LATE PRINCESS COULDN'T WAIT TO GET STARTED. ALONG IT CAME AND I WENT AND BOUGHT MORE COTTONS, I SHOULD HAVE BEEN SUSPICIOUS AS THE DESIGN WAS OF DIANA IN HER FAMOUS PURPLE VELVET GOWN, AND MOST OF THE THREADS WERE BROWN. IF YOU DO X STSITCH THEN YOU WILL KNOW SOME TIMES YOU CAN PUT IN AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT COLOUR AND THE FINISHED PRODUCT TURNS OUT BEAUTIFUL. NOT IN THE CASE I SEWED FOR MONTHS HOPING " IT WOULD ALL COME TOGETHER" IT DID BUT DIANA LOOKED AS THOUGH SHE HAD JUST COME FROM OUT OF A HORROR MOVIE. I TRIED TO LOOK BACK THROUGH MY FEEDBACK TO SEND A PICTURE BUT IT ONLY LET ME GO SO FAR. SO PLEASE IF YOU CHERISH SOME THING AND WANT TO MAKE A X STITCH PICTURE PLEASE GO TO THE PROFFESIONALS DMC ARE EXCELLANT. DON'T BE LIKE ME WASTE NEARLY £100 AND THE LONG HOURS AND END UP WITH A VERY DISSAPOINTING HORROR INSTEAD OF THE TREASURE YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE GOING TO HAVE. TAKE CARE AND ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO ASK. I AM SORRY I WANTED TO INCLUDE A PICTURE BUT ON THIS PROGRAMME I CAN'T REDUCE PICTURE, I ALSO WANTED TO INCLUDE A PICTURE OF DIANA I MADE USING A DMC PATTERN I ADVERTISED IT ON EBAY AND IT SOLD FOR £175. Cross Stitch PatternsBe careful about buying computer generated patterns as they have frequently not been stitched or tested in anyway and the actual finished cross stitch can look vastly different if not created stitch by stitch. It's much safer (esp if you are a new cross stitcher) to purchase a hand designed cross stitch pattern that has been tried and tested by a professional cross stitcher. Be sure you can see a good picture in the listing of how the finished cross stitch will look - this will be your guide to what you are getting. Hand designed pictures are often simpler in design than computer generated ones (ie pictures that are imported into a cross stitch software program without editing) - however, hand designed patterns will come out clearer, will be easier to follow and will use a lot less floss which saves you time and money. Called Floss in the US and Canada (called Cotton in UK/Europe and Australia/NZ) you'll need to purchase this seperately if you purchase a pattern (cross stitch kits come with floss inside them already, patterns do not). You pattern should contain a list of floss you will need to purchase to complete the cross stitch. Some patterns list Anchor, some DMC and some both. Be sure you check which brand of floss is available to you at your local craft store before buying a pattern. If you purchase a pattern which only lists Anchor floss but your local craft store only carries DMC you're going to be stuck with a pattern you can't use. COMPUTER-GENERATED CROSS STITCH CHARTS AND COPYRIGHTSDo you love to cross stitch? So do I, and let's face it - there are a lot of AMAZING patterns and kits out there these days. As a working artist, though, I've been disturbed by the number of copyright violations I've been noticing on eBay. I also love collecting and stitching beautiful patterns as much as the next stitcher, but there's a right way and a wrong way to go about it. Purchasing patterns and kits that have been properly licensed for sale by the original artists is always your best bet. You're assured of the best quality, and you're supporting the artist so that he or she can afford to continue creating all those images you love. Buying Completed Cross Stitch DesignsThere are hundreds of listings of completed cross stitch designs on Ebay. Trying to decide which one is right for you can be easier if you take a minute to consider the following tips: 1. Personal taste. If you see a design you absolutely love, then it is probably worth looking at closer. 2. Materials used: Cross stitch worked on linen or evenweave are higher in quality. The thread lays on this fabric much better than Aida cloth. It makes a smoother appearance to the design. It is also more expensive for the stitcher to use. Hence, if the price is higher, part of it comes from the type of fabric used. Anytime you see a design stitched '1 over 1', it is a special piece. '1 over 1' refers to 1 thread of floss over 1 thread of fabric. This requires the stitcher to make very tiny stitches and it is meticulous and time consuming work. Several patterns call for 1 over 1 on just the face or hands. The rest of the pattern is 2 over 2. This is still a high quality piece of work and should be regarded as such. 3. Appearance: Has the piece been cleaned and pressed? A caring cross stitcher will make sure it is clean and press it before offering it to you. Are the edges of the fabric free from frays? I used to use fray check on all my items, but have changed to serging the edges. Taping the edges leaves a sticky residue when removed and hard to wash out. 4. Reverse side: Some stitchers choose to show you the back of their work. It is a good thing. If you don't have a chance to see the back side, examine the piece when you receive it. Turn it over and look for knots, long threads or a messy appearance. This will tell you how carefully your cross stitch was stitched. A neat appearance without knots is a good sign. Of course, if the pattern calls for a lot of color changes in a small area of stitching,... MILL HILL BEADS BUTTONS CROSS STITCH BOOKS DMCWOW!! Mill Hill Beads are expensive and many are hard to find! THANK goodness for EBAY! I bought 6 Mill Hill banner Hangers and sure got a great deal! And, when I found a collection of 10 books, I bid it up to $92. Think I'm nuts? Not when I KNOW (since I am a seller AND a crafter) that these are so so rare. The Mill Hill and Sue Hillis collections are Beautiful when finished, and they are NOT as difficult as they appear. Go to a dollar store and get a good pair of reading glasses for $1....that way, you can buy several and make you a little travel kit. I take mine in a zippered 3 ring school binder that has a place for my books or samplers. And I bought some tiny jewelry bags for the beads and DMC floss. They are hole punched, and hung on the rings in the binder....all ready to go when I have another Dr. appointment, or have to get oil changed....or wait for my husband while HE shops in the tools store. Get organized!! I am preaching that right now...not just for spring cleaning, but because my biggest frustration in feeling the Creative urge, deciding on what kind of project I want to do, and then being too tired to start after getting it all together in one place. Know how I get my Cleaning done?? I reward my self with a shopping trip in Ebay AFTER I vacume and scrub floors. And I gave ME a huge collection of Mill Hill Beads after I had all of my projects in zipper bags and ready to start. That way I knew what I had, knew what I needed, and saw what I wanted in Ebay. Have fun in here!! You can shop and not have to put down your coffee cup. Plus after the kids are down for the night, you will have a little leisure time to recreate yourself, and find something new!! Hugs to all! And Happy Stitching! Lynnie&... Working With Computer Generated Cross Stitch PatternsWorking with computer generated cross stitch patterns is not much different, than working the conventional cross stitch pattern. The difference is, your completed project will be more of an "Work Of Art" instead of a cartoon like finished project. You will get more of a 3D effect with the computer gen. patterns. This is because of how the pattern is charted. It's like any picture you see on the net. There are lots of tiny dots that are blended together to form the design. You have to think of it as pixels in a photograph. There are more pages in the chart, but the finished design is worth the time that is put into the project! When you first get the design, you will think, this is impossible, I will never get this done. But it does go fast, and when you see the image appearing you will want to work harder to finish the design. Anyone, from the beginner cross stitcher to the advanced stitcher can do these designs. Basicaly, if you can count and make an X you can complete the project! There are no hard stitches, all stitches are full X's. Not all programs are the same when it comes to computer gen. patterns. You want to look for designs that use under 50 colors of floss. You will want to look for virtual stitched pictures, while looking at different designs. When you recieve your design, you will notice that there are several pages for the charts. Not all charts are layed out in the same manner, but this will give you an idea. The layout would be something like this: Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 5 Page 6 Once you have your pages layed out, you would look for the center markings. It's usually a small arrow on one of the top row pages, then another small arrow on the ... Purchasing Computer Generated Cross Stitch ChartsPurchasing computer generated cross stitching charts is much different than purchasing a regular cross stitch chart, leaflet, or book. There are several different programs for creating cross stitch patterns, as well as the option of using a CAD or similar program to create the charts. All of these methods create varying results, and the experience level of the creator is also an important variable. So, we'll explore this part of the purchase first. You want to look for a "virtual stitch" version of the picture. If the seller only displays the "original artwork" version of the chart, you may not want to purchase the chart because you have no idea what the finished product will be like. If they show both the "original artwork" view and the "virtual stitches" view then this a good thing, they are trying to show how close to original quality their products are going to be. If they don't show a virtual in their listing, you can always use the contact form and ask them to add one to the listing or email you one if you are truly interested in that specific pattern. Another very important thing you want to look for when purchasing a computer generated chart is the copyright information. Does the seller have permission to use the artwork they are using? Do they state this permission in their auction or store listings? This is a really serious part of the process of buying this type of chart. If they do not have permission to use the original image, and it's not a public domain image, they are committing copyright fraud and you will want to report them to ebay for violation of ebay terms. Also, there are several companies out there that are licensed to create cross stitch charts for specific artists. For example, in the fantasy art wo... Antique Needlework SamplersPurchasing antique needlework on Ebay can be fun and exciting. If you're just looking for something that pleases you, you'll have an easy time by merely looking at the photos and reading well-written descriptions. However, if you're a true sampler collector or are purchasing to resell or for investment purposes, there are some things to watch for and some things to watch out for. First, make sure the stitching is done on linen (not Aida). Aida cloth was invented in the 20th century, and therefore is not considered truly antique. Second, be mindful of holes and stains. Holes and stains are generally okay and can add to the overall beauty of the item, but as you probably have guessed, they normally bring down the price of the sampler. Finally, you might ask to see the stitching on the back of the item, as the neatness of the back can be an indication of the neatness and experience of the stitcher and thus the quality of the stitching. But you should always be reminded that decorators say to only hang what you love on your walls, so if it pleases you, ask questions first and then bid if you are satisfied. Computer Generated Cross Stitch PatternsComputer Generated Cross Stitch Patterns: So... you find a pattern on
Ebay you just love, the seller says it is computer generated, you like
it so much you buy it and then when it arrives your a horrified because
you wasted good money for a chart you more than likely will never

Buying Cross Stitch Fabric
Buying a Pre-sale or pre-order completed cross stitchDefined by Ebay, "Pre-sale listings are those that describe items for sale that are not in the control or possession of the seller at the time of the listing. These listings generally consist of items that are sold in advance of a delivery date to the public." Is this allowed on Ebay? Yes, but with certain rules to follow of which these might the areas that you need to watch for when thinking of buying a pre-order cross stitch. Guaranteed Shipment & Delivery Date The Proper Stitch By Darleen O'SteenAfter over twenty five years in the needlework industry, this is the must have book if you are a cross stitcher and stitch on Linen. This book is the best. The number one book. I FINALLY got mine on Ebay this past week after coveting it for years. I broke down bought it. It was money well spent. The book is out of print and very hard to find. The graphs for different stitches are very well drawn, well explained and if the stitch is not in this book, you don't need to stitch it. AAA Cross Stitch Buyer's GuideI am writing this as an attempt to assist in purchasing and completing your cross stitch projects. There are basically two ways to purchase your cross stitch design Kit: Kits contain everything you need to complete the design Typically this includes: Instructions Fabric, Thread, or Floss, Needle, and Chart. Some Kits May Include: Pre-sorted thread card (floss colors are seperated for you), beads, charms, blending filament, color chart. Most Kits do not include frames or finish products. Embellished Kits: Embellished Kits means the design is pre-printed on the fabric Counted Kits: Most cross stitch kits are counted cross stitch. This means you have a blank piece of fabric you stitch the design onto. Pattern: This is a book, chart, or graph of the design. You will have to purchase all items required seperately. This is nice if you like to stitch on a particular type of fabric (see our fabric buying guide) SELLERS: XS SCAM ARTISTS UNVERIFIED ADDRESSBeware of unverified addresses from overseas buyers! Most foreign buyers purchasing cross stitch charts have UNVERIFIED ADDRESSES. As a Paypal user, you need to be aware that shipping to an UNVERIFIED ADDRESS immediately cancels any rights you have as a seller under the Paypal Seller Protection rules. Therefore, a buyer from an unverified address can make any kind of untrue and ridiculous claim, and you as a seller have NO PROTECTION and will be forced to refund money. Protect yourself from foreign buyers who bid high as they want. No matter to them, they won't be paying for it! And they will have the pattern for free to boot. Insist on a verified address or no bids. You will be safe and it will be a fair auction for all honest bidders. Tips on Stitching Computer Generated Cross StitchTips for Stitching Computer Generated Cross Stitch Patterns: Computer generated cross stitch patterns usually include several pages of graphed symbols which can look confusing and daunting. Below are several ideas and tips that can simplify things a little. (or a lot!) * Most computer generated cross stitch designs are quite large. Some are over 250 stitch wide. Also, many use over 100 colors of floss. The first time you stitch a computer design, choose a smaller design and one that uses only 40-70 floss colors. * Tackle only one page at a time. Don?t worry about all the other pages. Treat each page as a mini project. As you progress from one page to another, the design will begin to appear as if by magic. (Really!) * If a design has a lot of one color in the background, say, the color white, for example, use white Aida and don't stitch the white background. If you can find Aida that closely matches the background color, it will save a lot of time stitching. (Note: If the design itself contains stitches the same color as the background, stitch them. Otherwise it will look unfinished and patchy.) * Start at one corner of a page and carefully work across and down, not straying too far from the work already stitched. There's nothing more frustrating than finding out way too late that you miss-counted how many stitches down or across you were supposed to go, then having to take those stitches out and restitch the design correctly. The farthest most stitchers go is about 10 stitches away from their work. * Invest in a set of colored pencils to mark the pattern symbols. Start with the lightest color of pencil and mark all the symbols of one color floss by circling each one. Stitch that color. (or as much as you can without straying to far. See hint above.) Next, using the same color pencil, mark the next set of symbols with an X. Sti...
