What is a salt water pool / chlorine generator?

Show Guide...

This review contains information I wish I had two years ago when first starting out and I hope it helps you learn about this technology quickly! It is written in two sections: A general explanation, and then my ownership experiences.

Friends, if you appreciate this guide then please take a moment to give it a Yes vote -- thanks in advance.

I first learned about saltwater pools from a friend who's summer project one year was about $120,000 worth of backyard landscaping which included, among other things, a saltwater pool with a waterfall. I had never heard of a saltwater pool before, and he explained that the main reason he used a saltwater solution in his pool was to reduce the operating costs. I thought saltwater pools were exotic technology but it turns out they are definitely cheaper to operate and maintain than traditional treated pools. Thankfully Intex, and many other manufacturers, make this equipment at a reasonable price so you don't have to be a millionaire to enjoy the technology.

1. General Explanation:

A chlorine generator is a new type of support equipment for recreational pools that eliminates the cost of purchased chlorine. Pools equipped with a chlorine generator, available in either stand alone units or in combination with a pump, generate chlorine automatically using the pool water itself and thereby avoid the cost associated with purchasing chlorine.

In order to utilize a chlorine generator, the pool water must be converted from a freshwater pool to what is called a "saltwater pool". This is accomplished by adding approximately 20 lbs of salt per 1000 gallons of fresh water. The salinity (saltiness) of the pool may be adjusted up and down according to the requirements of the manufacturer of the chlorine generator. Techncially, this low level of salinity is still considered fresh water by drinking water standards.

The chlorine gener...

Used Spa / Hot Tub Purchasing

Show Guide...

I recently purchased a used spa on E-Bay and have learned quite a lot about the used spa area.  Take the time prior to purchasing a spa to look for internet resources and learn of the problem areas that involve the spa world.  When I purchased my used spa, I had no idea what to look for and was taken for a ride.  It eventually was worked out and became a good investment.

Remember that if you have a good shell and are handy with tools and plumbing that you can repair.replace the motors and pumps for about $700.00.  Also a good cover is worth it's weight in gold.  Make sure that you have a good cover to conserve heat and water.

Along with the cost of the spa itself, you need to remember that the installation is very important.  Expect to spend about $500.00 on a professional electrician to install the wiring and breaker panel.

Save yourself alot of aggravation and RESEARCH the purchase first.  It will make you wiser about the problems of a used tub and help you know the questions to ask the seller.

Green Swimming Pool How to Make it Turn Blue

"Attack of the killer blonde on the very green swimming pool"
OR
How to make your pool perfect. The HARD way.

I  want to tell you "how to" and "how not to" turn your home swimming pool from green to blue. This is my personal story of my  month long saga so that you can learn from my mistakes

My son ( Trey) has a swimming pool in his backyard, I told him he was spending too much money on pool maintenance and he needed to learn to do it himself.  I bought him a CD that had excellent advise, but my son is lazy....very lazy....so here in lies the tale of my woes and the ensuing expense.

Day 1
About a month ago I was visiting Trey's house and his swimming pool was dark, dark green, and had these little things swimming in it. I consulted my  next door neighbor Mark who has a pool, and he told me that I probably needed to shock the pool and add algae cleaner to it and it would be fine.  So off I go to Home Depot and bought shock and algae cleaner....I dump 3 pounds of shock in the pool and a bottle of algae cleaner in the pool and nothing happens...What ....this is suppossed to work...Oh ok, so it's not instant , you need to wait at least 4 hours before anything happens according to the back of the package ....so I sit by the pool to wait ..Cost $20. Sitting by the pool and drinking a bottle or two of wine $30.00. Well maybe cause it is such a big pool it will take longer than 4 hours, so I'll come back tomorrow.&...

Hot tub & Spa Cover Buying Guide

Show Guide...

There are many hot tub & spa covers available on ebay and the internet. This guide is designed to help you know the attributes that make up a hot tub & spa covers, so you can choose the best spa cover for you, at the best price available.

Foam thickness

All spa covers these days are tapered so that the rain, snow and ice will runoff much like the roof of your house. You will find covers ranging in thickness starting at a 3 inches in the middle tappered to 2 inches on the outside edge, to a 5 inch tappered to 4 inches. The difference in the thickness of the foam is not only size but also load capacity, and that is the most important part of the thickness. The thicker the foam the more load the cover can withstand. For example a 4? x 2? tapered cover can withstand approximately 75lbs. of load capacity before it will break whereas a 4? x 3? can withstand 125lbs. of load. And lastly a 5? x 4? can withstand a load of 250lbs. As with everything there are tradeoffs the more load capacity the heavier the cover. The most important thing to look at is your climate, the more snow load the heavier the cover you require. If your spa is at deck level and people are possibly going to walk on it you will need a 5? x 4?. If your spa is indoors you can get away with a 4?...

Is Bigger Always Better?? Not Always! Pool Equip Sizing

Show Guide...

Having the right equipment for a swimming pool and/or spa can mean the difference of not only money but safety as well. Is bigger always the best way to go when picking a pump and filter for your swimming pool and or spa?? The answer is..........Yes & No!

I've been in the Swimming Pool Industry for nearly 15 years and have seen enough pool equipment sets sized incorrectly to question whether the money that is being wasted would clear our national debt. So often the pool pump is too large, and the filter too small. Common equipment set I see in the S.Calif area for a 20,000Gallon Pool with an 8ft round spa with 6-8 Jets with the equipment pad approx 50ft from the pool & spa return line(s)....

(1)2.0 Horsepower High Head Pump(i.e. whisper-flo, Northstar, Max-e-Pro)

(1)48sqft or 60sqft. D.E. Filter or 325sqft High Capacity Cartridge filter.

Then you have the heater and possibly a salt system to assist in sanitizing..... This type of set-up is completely incorrect. This example should not be the norm!!! Let me explain....

When running a 2.0 H.P. Pump for pool or spa circulation, you are simply pushing the water thru the filter and a flow rate that will  damage the Filter elements inside the filter(Grids or Cartridges) prematurely. Also the goal in water circulation is to turn all the water over thru the filter in 6-8 hours (In peak season). A 2.0 H.P. power pump should only be used for the Spa Jets. That is what larger pumps are meant to do.

Water clarity is optimized when the water is being turned over completely in the allotted time of equipment operation . If the water is being blasted at too high of a G.P.M.(Gallons per minute) thru the filter, The filtering action is greatly diminished. Moving the water thru the filter as slowly as possible while turning over the...

CHLORINE: DO YOU KNOW WHO YOUR WARRIORS ARE?

Show Guide...

Free chlorine -- Tied up chlorine -- Total chlorine?  It's all chlorine isn't it?

It's all chlorine, but only one type of chlorine is busy working to keep your swimming pool healthy.  Do you know which chlorine you're testing?

Here's a quick breakdown of what each chlorine reading tells any pool owner ...

Free Chlorine is the ACTIVE sanitizer in your pool.  It's busy killing germs, bacteria, and breaking down contaminants in your pool.  Free chlorine are your warriors.

Tied up Chlorine (or combined chlorine) is busy, but often times the chlorine becomes too busy to be considered active.  On the other hand, sometimes this chlorine is just spent and has worn itself out.  Either reason, the tied up chlorine in a pool is INACTIVE.  Tied up chlorine are tired warriors who either need to be free'd up or retired.  If these guys retire, they retire; if they just need free'd up, they'll usually go into the free chlorine zone and get active.

Total Chlorine is just the sum of the free and tied up chlorine.  When you add these two numbers together, sure ... you'll get a chlorine reading, but you won't know who your warriors are.

Make sure you know which chlorine reading you're testing ... it matters in the life of a healthy swimming pool.

hot tubs, spa's and jacuzzi's

Show Guide...

The purpose of this guide is to advise the ebay community on the ways in going about purchasing a hot tub, spa or jacuzzi from ebay. This guide was written by HotTubs2Buy.co.uk a hot tub retailer in the UK in order to ensure the safety of ebayers when purchasing a hot tub.

Ebay is a great source of infomation when it comes to purchasing a new product, you clearly have the products in front of you with high resolution images, with prices and a detailed description. Most people first port of call when purchasing a product will be ebay, as it is quite easy to search for the best value product. This is great when purchasing low value low risk products, however, extra care needs to be taken when purchasing high value products such as hot tubs, spas or jacuzzi's. (which my the way are all the same thing)

I am sure most of you are able to surf and view product on ebay and are aware of feedback, however the prudent ebayer will look a little deeper into a potential sellers feedback especially when purchasing high value items such as hot tubs from ebay company's. This is because feedback can be gained quite easily from purchasing products as well as selling them. An unscrupulous ebayer you quite easily buy 100 items at 50p each and gain a 100% positive feedback score of 100 for just £50, before he or she has even sold a product. That is why you much alway filter the feedback using the feeback from buyer button. The second check you must apply to feedback it to check the type of product that that ebayer has been selling. This can be done by clicking on the item link next to the feedback. This is because it is all very well the seller having a positive feedback score of 100 just from buyers, if they are selling computer games. This generally means they have no experience in selling hot tubs, and therefore unlikely to have an established support network. Also remember that feedback i...

TURN CLOUDY POOL WATER INTO SPARKLING LIQUID ICE!

Show Guide...

Sparkling Liquid Ice.  That's what the water in a really, really great swimming pool often looks like.  Even though it's pool water, the body of water can literally remind you of clear, lush white wine made just for swimming.

This is what a truly clear pool can look like, but if you battle cloudy water from time to time ... here are a few quick tips to look for:

  1. Test your alkalinity and ph.  Since alkalinity controls ph, often times treating the alkalinity can remedy ph problems.  Make sure your alkalinity and ph are in balance.
  2. Test your chlorine readings.  Tied up chlorine can produce cloudy water.  If you are unfamiliar with the differences between free, tied up, and total chlorine, be sure to read CHLORINE: KNOW YOUR WARRIORS; a guide written to explain why each chlorine reading is important.
  3. Small debris can also cause cloudy water.  Sometimes the naked eye can't detect these particles but your pool water can!  A flocking agent can help gather what ordinarily can not be seen in order for it to be either filtered out of your pool or removed via vacuuming to waste.

This is the third swimming pool guide written to help people who are puzzled or frustrated.  If you are interested in knowing a little about who I am ... or how I'm able to write about swimming pool tips, check out the Creativity Shoppe's ABOUT ME page.

BACKYARD POOLS: CHLORINE & BUDGETS IN SIMPLE TERMS

Show Guide...

Backyard swimming pools can be a great source of fun and relaxation during the hot days of summer!  You know where the kids are ... there's a "vacation" in the backyard all year long ... you don't have to contend with driving to the nearest public pool ... the conveniences of owning your own pool are immeasurable and besides, all it takes is a little chlorine to keep it healthy!

But really, what is "a little" in terms of chlorine?

Actually, the amount of chlorine for any one pool depends entirely on so many variables that to make a definitive statement would be misleading.  Every pool has its own "chlorine demand."  But there are some things you, as a pool owner, can do to help make your chlorine go a little further; which in the end, could make a difference in your family budget.

  1. When buying maintenance chlorine, be sure you're getting stabilized chlorine.  Stabilized chlorine contains an ingredient that helps your pool in its battle with the sun.  To a certain degree, the sun has the ability to draw out portions of chlorine and its enought to make a difference in how often you need to add more chlorine.
  2. Unstabilized chlorine is good for chlorine shocks; not for maintenance.  In fact, in the long run, shocking a pool with stabilized chlorine can become just as expensive as maintaining a pool with an unstabilized chlorine.  Just remember:  unstabilized = shock AND stabilized = maintenance.
  3. Have your pool water checked for its cynuaric acid (stabilizer) level.  This reading will tell you if and/or how much protection your pool has from the "sun war" it battles on a daily basis.  If your level is low, it is well worth the time and money to invest in establishing a suitable ...

Why does Ebay Refuse to Help Us? Steve Lanni Spa Ripoff

I have tried for ages to get Ebay to respond to STEVEN TODD LANNI deliberately stealing money from the faithful users of Ebay. I am pasting this information to show that indeed Ebay was warned and still opted to do nothing and now MANY, MANY Ebayers were vicitms of fraud. SEE BELOW: Billy Stallings Hi, I worked for Four Winds Manufacturing when Steve stuck us with alot of unpaid Invoices. Even after we quit doing business with him he still showed pictures of our Hot Tubs on Ebay and his website. As a longtime Ebayer in good standing I contacted Ebay many times making them aware that he could not possibly sell these spas because he could not longer buy them. They seemed uninterested in knowing about the situation. He could have possibly Splashed (A term for copying a spa) our spas but splashing takes time and he didn't have enough time from the time that we quit doing business with him to splash them. I warned Ebay that this would happen and even warned bidders for a while until he made his feedback and bidders private. The money he stole from Kevin was really more than 38,000 because he got many parts he never paid for also. He even knowingly listed spas with 5 HP Pumps for sale in the UK knowing that 5 HP pumps were not available for UK applications. I know! he knew I engineered the Four Winds UK spas and made him aware of the specs. I have seen Steve face to face many times and he's a Cocky Little Worm. I wanted to Whoop his ass Everytime I saw him but I Held back Because of my Job. I still do Sub-contract work for Four Winds and go there many times a week. Ebay should be liable for anyone who purchased from their site because they were duely warned in Advance by Me & the Manufacturer of the spas whose pictures were used in his Ebay listing. I even sent them links to The Four Winds website and other items to prove the pictures were not his spas. I even took alot of the pictures he used. Spa Chemicals 101-An Easy Introduction to Spa Chemicals

    Show Guide...

Here's a spa water chemistry primer that should help clarify what actually goes on in the mysterious soup that is your spa water. If you are seeking true hot tub enlightenment, please read on?

If your experience was anything like ours, the most confusing thing about owning a spa is dealing with the chemicals that are required to do a whole bunch of seemingly complicated things. There are sanitizers, shock, pH balancers, test strips, water cleaners, filter cleaners and you name it. They all do different things except for chlorine, bromine, minerals and ozone which all do the same thing? only differently, which leads us to?

    "The most important thing"
    AN INTRODUCTION TO SANITIZERS

We know an expert in our business who says, "on a scale of one to ten, using a sanitizer in your spa is a" ten" and everything else begins at around a three." Our friend tends to exaggerate for effect, but he's got a point. Sanitizing your spa water is the most important spa maintenance you can do for yourself. Why? Because sanitizers kill the bacteria and viruses that populate every spa (that's right Mr. Clean, even your spa). Put bluntly, you don't take a soak in an un-sanitized spa for the same reasons you don't stick your head in a toilet (yes, we know, but just because your friends think you should do it doesn't mean you should). Got the picture? Ok, so here's a quick run down on the different types of spa sanitizers:

Chlorine: You're probably familiar with Chlorine as the primary sanitizer used in pools. You can use chlorine safely in spas too, except in a different concentration. There are chlorine tablets and chlorine granules created specifically for spa use.

Bromine: Bromine tablets are a combination of sodium bromide and chlorine. Many people choose bromine over chlorine because the sm...

I get asked all the time how I built my in ground swimming pool? Well, I didn't actually dig the hole or pour the concrete but I did act as the Builder/Owner of my very own In Ground (IG) swimming pool. It wasn't rocket science but  a  lot of people are reluctant to spend any time researching for themselves what is involved in building, or designing an in-ground (IG) Swimming pool. This results in a lot of  uniformed people being taken by unscrupulous contractors. Essential spas Alexandria 59 Jet spa

    Show Guide...

Awesome spa, everything was as manufacturer stated, and delivered ahead of schedule by very helpful drivers. I cannot rate this spa or manufacturer highly enough . I AM including a few not so perfect points here because I believe everyone has the ability to improve. If I don't mention it here then it is probably EXCELLENT:

Balboa controller states to wire in minimum #6 wire. This is per NEC, but in fact NOTHING larger than #6 will fit under terminals and even then  the Bend Radius for this wire to fit terminals is almost impossible.Balboa needs to redesign the wire entry point.

The Cover lift system makes removing the cover amazingly simple, but the assembly directions leave A LOT to be desired. Make sure you mount the supports 3 inches from the ground, not 1/2 inch as stated, and use 1 long 90 degree bent pipe and one short for the top support, and then same again for the bottom support.

Steps: Be ready to use some 2x4 wood and a large hammer to assemble steps, maybe dish soap would have helped.

Nine colored light upgrade: This is ALL NINE colors at the same time, that was not clear to me.

Easy access electrical panel! : Hmmm! about 15 screws and a whole 8ft by 2 foot panel to remove!!!

Some jets and controls getting a little hard to turn: Probably need a coating of teflon, I'll try this soon.

THAT'S IT. Apart from these small points the spa is Awsome!!!.,

PS. Stainless jets are well worth the upgrade money,  and insulation factor is amazing.

Swimming Pool Fencing - What to look for in fence types

    Show Guide...

    Swimming Pool Fencing

Purchasing swimming pool fencing thru eBay or any other mail order venue might be one of the most important decisions you'll make. This type of product is used primarily to keep small children and/or pets away from your backyard swimming pool, spa, or other similar water hazard. There are vast differences in specifications, types of fencing used, and installation requirements. Learn the differences before 'plunging into' the safeguarding of YOUR swimming pool.

Pool fencing is used primarily for INGROUND pools and in THAT application I will focus my attention. Don't let the following statement deter you from safeguarding your ABOVEGROUND pool:  STATISTICALLY, small children drown in inground pools. The sides of aboveground pools generally lend a natural barrier (if all steps are removed) in keeping toddlers from dropping into the water.

    • FENCING TYPES:  In deciding what TYPE of fencing to use to safeguard your swimming pool, you'll want to keep a few things in mind. Some fencing can only be installed on a hard-type surface (ie: brick, concrete, & heavy wood decking) and ideally you'll want to utilize a type of material that is 'non-climbable' in nature and easily 'seen through' to the swimming pool (that's the big problem with wood fencing - you can't see the pool!).  The three most popular types of fencing used are permanent wrought-iron, hard vinyl, and vinyl mesh fencing. There are advantages and diadvantages with them all. The First type: Wrought iron fences rust, though they usually will last thru the dangerous 'toddler period' of a child's life. They are generally permanent, gates that are not ALWAYS self-closing and latching tend to be the weak-link of the...
