Buying Antique or Vintage Sterling Silver on eBay

Show Guide...

Where else on earth can you see thousands of individual pieces of sterling silver, with photos and detailed descriptions than right here on eBay? You can find an item by silversmith, pattern name, kind of item or genre. The reputation of the seller is displayed before you. And for the treasure hunter, this is definitely the spot. I am thebidwatcher and I think I know a thing or two about silver!

Hallmarks tell the story!

On the back of each piece of quality silver there are small marks which tell you where it is from, the quality content , when and where it was made. If only men were like this! There are guides on the internet to help you identify them. There are pattern guides too.

How to Read a British Hallmark

  • Symbol #1: Maker's Mark (in this case, Tom Olivant)
  • Symbol #2: Lion Passant to show Royal control
  • Symbol #3: Town Mark (in this case, London)
  • Symbol #4: Date Mark (in this case, 1798)
  • Symbol #5: Duty Mark used 1794-1894

I lead a discussion group called Sterling Silver Lovers here on eBay and you are welcome to join. We ask each other about hallmarks, rare items, selling and buying silver on eBay. You can even download and look at photos there. I list the resources on the web for identifying marks and patterns there.

Vintage Mexican Silver Hallmarks- A Beginner's Guide

Show Guide...

Have you ever wondered about the letters, numbers or pictures on the back of Mexican Sterling Silver Jewelry?  These marks are referred to as hallmarks or trademarks.  They can help you identify where the piece was made, the identity of the silversmith and the approximate age of the piece.

The hallmark identifies the quality or the purity of the silver- i.e. .925, .999, .980, sterling or sterling silver.  The hallmark may also include the date and location of the assay, the maker's mark and any import tax or duty.  The maker's mark is used to identify the silversmith- generally their name or initials.

In 1980 Mexico silversmiths initiated a letter and number system to register silversmiths.  The first letter indicates the city and the second letter is the first letter of the silversmith's last name.  The most common cities are Taxco and Mexico City.

Examples:

TF-83  might be a piece made in Taxco by Fernandez who would be the 83rd smith to be registered as TF in Taxco.

MP-36 would indicate the piece was made in Mexico City by perhaps a smith named Perez who was the 36th smith registered as MP in Mexico City

The piece above is stamped with 925 indicating it is sterling silver, Mexico and TC-85.  So we know this is  a sterling silver piece made in Taxco by a silversmith who last name begins with a 'C' and whose registration number is 85.  We also know that this piece is no more than 25 years old or that it could be brand new.  The owner of this piece indicated it was purchased in Mexico in the early 1980's.

IM POOR ,CAN I BUY GOOD JEWELRY CHEAP

Show Guide...

I HAVE PEOPLE COME TO ME ALL THE TIME,SAME STORY,"I SAW AN AD,I WENT TO -? MART,I SAVED AND I BOUGHT AND AFTER A COUPLE OF MONTHS IT TURNED BLACK."CAN I EVER BUY JEWELY THAT WILL LAST FOR ME?"

ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS I TELL THEM IS ,KNOW WHAT THE AD SAYS.,AND KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR.

IF YOU WANT GOLD AND CANT AFFORD GOLD,LOOK FOR GOLD PLATED,(BUT WHAT THE AVERAGE PERSON DOESNT KOW IS=THERE IS A DIFFERENCE IN GOLD PLATING.--IF AN AD SAYS 10KGOLD PLATING,OR 18K,OR 24K,-NONE OF THAT MAKES ANY DIFFERENCE---,IT'S HOW MANY TIMES IT IS PLATED THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE.SO IF YOU SEE AN AD THAT SAYS 10K GOLD PLATING,OR 24KGPL,OR 18KGPL.DOESNT MEAN MUCH,UNLESS THEY TELL YOU HOW MANY TIMES IT WAS PLATED.-THEN,YOU LOOK FOR THE "MILLS",AND SOME WILL SAY 40MILLLS,80 MILLS,100 MILLS,-OK,THAT'S A START.,BUT IN MOST STORES,SAD TO SAY,LIKE DISCOUNT ?MART OR ADS IT WILL ONLY SAY GOLD PLATED,I CAN TELL YOU NOW,RUN LIKE HELL.IT WILL TURN BLACK AND YOUR MONEY IS WASTED.

YOU ALSO NEED TO KNOW --WHAT DID THEY PLATE IT OVER?--WAS IT BRASS,NICKLE,PEWTER,SILVER?????,SAD TO SAY MOST CHEAP ADS SAY "GOLD PLATED" AND THATS ALL YOU GET--RUN AWAY.

SO YOU ARE POOR,I GREW UP MY WHOLE LIFE POOR AND I MADE UP MY MIND,IF I BOUGHT JEWELRY,IT HAD BETTER LAST,AND YOU DONT HAVE TO SPEND A FORTUNE FOR GOOD JEWELY IN TODAY'S WORLD.

A FEW TIPS HERE,

MAKE SURE AD SAYS WHAT IT IS PLATED OVER,LIKE TECHNIBOND SAYS 40 MILLS OVER STERLING,THAT;S GOOD(JUST DONT SUBJECT IT TO CHEMICALS OR EVEN IT WILL TURN ORANGE)

SEE IF THEY SAY HOW MANY MILLS,THINK OF IT LIKE THIS,(FOR EVERY MILL IS HOW MANY TIMES THEY DIP IT)-NOT SCIENTIFIC,BUT JUST A WAY FOR YOU TO REMEMBER THINGS.

IF THEY DONT SAY WHAT IT IS PLATED OVER OR LAYERED OVER OR HOW MANY MILLS-RUN TO THE NEXT EXIT.

What is Gold Filled Jewelry vs Gold Plated and why buy?

Show Guide...

When deciding on a gold jewelry item there are always many different terms that come up.  The most popular are Solid Gold, Gold Filled, and Gold Plated.  It is important to know the differences between Gold Filled jewelry and Gold Plated jewelry when making your choice.  Solid gold is of course an exquisite piece of jewelry.  Gold filled is the next level and is an amazing, quality alternative to solid gold.  Gold plating is the lower level and these items tend to tarnish and can often times turn the skin green.

Gold Filled:  Gold filled is an actual layer of gold-pressure bonded to another metal.  Gold filled is not to be confused with gold plating as filled literally has 100% more gold than gold plating.  Gold filled is much more valuable and tarnish resistant.  It does not flake off, rub off or turn colors.  As a matter of fact, anyone who can wear gold can wear gold filled without worries of any allergic reaction to the jewelry.  Gold filled jewelry is an economical alternative to solid gold!

Guide To Brighton Jewelry & Accessories

Show Guide...

Brighton is a designer of jewelry, hand bags, wallets, shoes, sunglasses, watches and belts. They have now expanded their lines with fragrances that come in beautiful bottles and also Home Decor items. All things femenine (but they also have several lines of mens wallets and money clips). They got their start with a strictly western style design, but in recent years they have really expanded their designs to appeal to everyone.

I have noticed on ebay some people selling items titled "Diane Brighton" or "Bebe Brighton". Please be aware that these items are not authentic Brighton. There should be no name in front of the word Brighton -- ever. Another way that you can tell if you have an authentic piece is that almost every piece of Brighton (with the exception of earrings) will have either the full Brighton name on it somewhere or a small heart with a large cursive B in the same script as their logo, as seen below.

Brighton accessories are well made using only genuine leather. And although most are silver plated, you would never know it. I have had pieces for years, worn them many times they do not easily tarnish or fade. They look like solid sterling silver jewelry and they look good Longer than sterling silver.

Brighton rings are solid sterling silver. All posts, french wires, and leverbacks on earrings are solid sterling silver. All other jewelry and ornaments are cast in solid brass or zinc, and then lavishly dipped in pure silver. Since silver has a natural tendency to tarnish and scratch, they add a protective layer of laquer to help prevent these things.

Here are some photos of Authentic Brighton Collections:

Creating your own Jewelry

Show Guide...

I have been doing this for about 6 months now, so by no means am I an expert in this field.  However, for those of you wanting to start, I'd like to share what I have learned.

First, it's important to use the right beading wire. Don't go cheap here, all that will happen is the bracelet or necklace will break at some point.  I only use Beadalon 49 Strand Wire, Invisiline, or 1mm Stretch Magic wire.   When I first started out I bought the 19 Strand Wire and found it couldn't hold the heavier beads after several months.

There are some great tools out there that are must haves.  First a wire cutter to cut the Wire to length as well as the excess. Chain nose pliers can be used for crimping the beads as well as holding the headpins while wrapping the wire with the Roundnose pliers. A split ring tool is not essential but makes attaching rings to Charms much easier.

The Chain nose pliers are great for crimping until you become more advanced. I currently have begun using the Bead crimper tool which provides a more polished look. The lower section will crimps the wire into two separate strands, while the upper section folds it in half and rounds it off.  You need to make sure the wires are laying parallel when you do the first crimp, or the crimp may not be as secure.

There are several different sizes of crimps.  They range for 1mm which are great for the illusion style jewerly, up to the 3mm size to use when threading multiple strands of wire.  Some like to secure the jewelry with two crimps, I prefer just one.

Now that you have your tools and wire, its time to find the beads.  I stay away from plastic beads as they give the jewelry a type of unfinished and cheap look. I generally stick with Glass beads, Gemstones, Bali Silver, Lampwork beads, S...

Beware of eBay .925 Sterling Silver Pendant FRAUD

Show Guide...

All pendants that are advertised on eBay as 925 sterling silver should have the industry standard "925" trademark engraved on the back of the pendant or the bail.  Items advertised as sterling silver should always have this trademark.  Jewelry advertised simply as silver are usually only coated with a thin micron of silver over cheaper metal, such as copper.  Please email me if you have any questions

DECORATING MICROSCOPE SLIDES FOR SCRAPBOOKING + JEWELRY

Show Guide...

Microscope slides are a wonderful idea for scrapbook pages as they are very thin and now finally come in unbreakable vinyl/plastic. To decorate them just cut a picture or stamped piece of paper in the size of the slide, use spray adhesive to cover the fron tof the picture and adhere to the microscope slide with the plastic covering the front of the picture.

Now finish the edges with metal tape which comes in different widths. I prefer to use 1/4" Venture Copper Tape - MasterFoil Plus which was made for stained glass projects and can be found in Home Depot stores or crafting aisles. However, soldering works great also.

If you want to further embellish your microscope slides you also can punch holes in them or cut them with regular scissors as they are thin enough and won't get damaged.

If you want to use a microscope slide just without a picture, these also work great when stamped on, perfect with STAZ-ON ink which dries pretty quick and are a great use for stamping on words or even titles.

For jewelry just use 2 slides for back and front to protect your picture. Use the slides to make charm bracelets, necklace pendants, or I even have seen them used as Christmas ornaments.

What is Marcasite?

Show Guide...

Marcasite used in jewelry is really the mineral iron pyrite.  They both have the same chemical composition but a different crystal structure which results in pyrite being stable while marcasite can crumble.  It is an attractive and interesting mineral that is used in sterling silver jewelry.  Small polished and faceted stones are inlaid into the silver which adds an extra sparkle to the jewelry.  The stones have a metallic luster and are opaque.

Marcasite first came into fashion as a gemstone under the reign of Louis XIV of France, when it was set in silver and crafted into floral sprays and rosettes for brooches and buckles.  The use of marcasite in jewelry was very fashionable and popular in Victorian times and Queen Victoria is said to have favored marcasite in her jewelry.  Marcasite jewelry regained popularity in the Roaring Twenties after World War I and fit perfectly into the Art Deco style.  Today it gives jewelry a vintage look and adds an old world quality to modern jewelry.

Secrets of the Jewelry Trade - Part 1

Show Guide...

If you think this guide is helpful and interesting, please click 'Yes' below.

Having just recently quit the Wholesale Jewelry Business, I have decided to write a guide in several parts regarding the goings-on in the Jewelry Industry.

My hope and wish is to educate you - the consumer - about the inside tricks and secrets that make the Jewelry Industry what it is today.

My eBay Store features a wide array of Semi Mount Engagement Rings, Pendants, and loose stones. Stop on by and say hello!

Secret #1:

The entire Jewelry industry is really just a bunch of baloney! Everybody proclaims themselves to be a bigshot "Designer"; they brand their Jewelry like crazy - pouring hundreds of thousands of Dollars into advertising - and people start to believe that the "Designer" Jewelry is worth the sky-high price tag.

Well, let me tell you: gold is gold, diamonds are diamonds, and labor is labor. What I am trying to say is this: everybody pays the same price at the wholesale/manufacturing level! As long as they buy the same quality of what goes into the Jewelry, the finished product will cost me, you, and the "Designer" the same.

The only difference is that the "Designer" can turn around and ask three times as much for his Jewelry, because he's been brainwashing everybody that his pieces are "special". It's just a marketing gimmick!

The bottom line is this: everybody should pay only slightly more than the cost of the "ingredients" that go into each piece of Jew...

The Pricing of Gemstone, Handcrafted, Artisan Jewelry

Show Guide...

What's behind the price differences in artisan, gemstone jewelry?

Without an expert's eye, you may look at similar pieces of jewelry and wonder why one costs so much more than the other. The pricing of hand-crafted gemstone jewelry depends on several factors, including the quality of the material, the workmanship, and the complexity and uniqueness of the design.  This last factor is especially important in artisan, gemstone jewelry.

-GEM QUALITY:  I'm not going to elaborate on the "c's" (cut, color, clariy and carat) that are already familiar to many people.  I'm going to provide some real life examples.

In my eBay store, Halne Designs, I have two different styles of citrine and amethyst chandelier earringsOne is "dressy" and the other is more casual;  therefore less expensive.  In the more casual style, the  round citrine is non-faceted.  In the "dressier" style, I used faceted citrine briolettes.  A faceted stone that is well cut will cost more than a smooth, non-faceted stone.  The amethyst that is use...

What is Rhodium ?

Show Guide...

Rhodium is one of the member of the platinum metals group. It is a hard durable metal like palladium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium. When jewellery plated with Rhodium, it can 1) resistance to oxidation under very extreme environmental conditions 2) eliminate sensitive to nickel and 3) resistance to jewellery discoloring.

Back to 1803, a English chemist William Wollasto find this metal. Since this new metal was in red color when dissolved and he name that base on the Greek word rhodon meaning rose. Nowaday, the primary sources for rhodium are in Russina, Soiuth Africa and Canada.

Birthstone Guide

Show Guide...

Most gem scholars agree that the tradition of birthstones arose from the Breastplate of Aaron: a ceremonial religious garment set with twelve gemstones that represented the twelve tribes of Israel and also corresponded with the twelve signs of the zodiac and the twelve months of the year.

Because ancient people did not always classify gemstones by mineral species like we do, there is some debate about which gemstones were set in the breastplate and why. Because of this, different cultures around the world have developed different birth stone lists. The modern day list that you know is only the most recent list: some older lists still exist. Some also argue that the proper way to assign gemstones is according to astrological sign and not month. We think it is more fun to choose the gemstone that speaks to you from all the possibilities. Of course it is hard to keep track of all the lists. Enter the Gem-o-Matic! Select your birthdate or other significant date or anniversary and the Gem-o-Matic will give you the list of all the birthstones that correspond to that date!

   Garnet- January's Birthstone

Garnet is the birthstone for the month of January. The word "Garnet" is derived from the Latin word granatus, meaning like a grain. It refers to the mode of occurrence where crystals resemble grains or seeds embedded in a matrix. Garnet is a family of minerals having similar physical and crystalline properties.

Garnet have high indices of refraction and are very hard with variety of colors. They are transparent, lack cleavage and are quite durable. Garnets vary greatly in colors and varieties being rare and beautiful. ...

Tips to keep STERLING SILVER from tarnishing

Show Guide...

Ever wonder why sterling silver tarnishes?  It's because of the copper alloy, which when exposed to the elements, such as moisture and skin acids, will affect the copper turning it greenish.  Look at the Statue of Liberty...

Which then begs, we've all had something sterling which begins to tarnish over time. Have you tried those liquid cleaners only to have your sterling turn a dull, chalky gray?

I have a few pointers that should really help!

If you're going to use a liquid cleaner, only use Tarn-X in the black bottle.  And be sure that what you're dipping in the solution is only sterling silver and not silver toned.  Toned means that there is a base metal underneath a silver electroplated coating and dipping the piece won't work...in fact, it may ruin it.  Look for the sterling silver .925 stamp on your piece to be sure.  While most manufacturers will electroplate over sterling silver to keep it from tarnishing, some folks, like me, who enjoy the qualities of sterling in it's natural state, will need these tips to keep it bright.

I also recommend a simple and effective method of taking an old toothbrush, moisten it with water, then dip it in baking soda, so it forms a paste.  Gently scrub the sterling jewelry with this mixture and rinse under warm water.  Then pat dry with a lint free cloth.  You should notice an immediate improvement!

***Just be sure to avoid all stones with this mixture as the baking soda acts as a mild abrasive!!***

You can also use the baking soda in it's dry state and rub it between your fingers and the jewelry, too.

Finally, a two sided rouge/tripoli polishing cloth will do wonders and you can pick one of these up at any hi...

Guide to buying sterling silver online

Show Guide...

Here is a short, simple guide. All items that are sterling silver should say "sterling" silver somewhere in the description. 925 silver (sterling) is best. All products should be marked sterling silver or 925. Silver made in Italy often has a shinier "whiter" more lustrous finish and is often preferred. The best silver  you'll find will probably be sterling (preferably 925) Italian silver. Read description carefully to make sure item is not silver coated or plated (if you want solid silver) make sure it says 100% solid 925 sterling silver. :)

What is Rose Gold?

Show Guide...

What is Rose Gold?

Rose Gold Jewelry

Rose gold, also known as pink gold or red gold, is a mixture of pure yellow gold with a high percentage of copper. It has a very subtle and delicate color that may intensify somewhat with age due to a slight, but attractive, tarnishing of the copper.

Rose gold is created by increasing the copper-colored alloys mixed with the gold and decreasing the silver-colored alloys. 14K rose gold contains as much pure gold as 14K yellow gold but, because of the increased copper, is slightly pinker in color. Rose gold is available in 9K, 14K and in 18K gold.

Ordering Rose Gold Jewelry - Online Before ordering rose gold jewelry, you should be familiar with the color of rose gold. Perhaps a friend or your jeweler can show you what rose gold jewelry looks like. You may also use this picture to see the difference between yellow gold and rose gold:

Storing your sterling silver in the open air and humidity for extended periods of time can cause it to tarnish quickly.  Tarnish first appears as a golden hue on your sterling silver then quickly turns to black.  This is a normal process that is caused by oxidization and moisture from air and believe it or not sunshine. To keep tarnish to a minimum it is advised that you store your jewelry pieces when not wearing them.

To reduce tarnish and keep your pieces tarnish free for months at a time, it is recommended that you keep your sterling silver jewelry in an air-tight protective bag made of tarnish proof cloth or you can use a plastic zip lock bag made of Mylar (turkey cooking bags) or polyethylene.  Be warned that some plastic contains sulfur compounds which can cause your jewelry to tarnish faster or stain.  Never use polyvinyl plastic bags.  We store and ship our jewelry in tiny zip-lock bags that are perfect for this.  I have found zip-lock bags work well for storing your sterling silver jewelry in and most jewelers store their sterling silver jewelry this way as well.

Sterling silver, stored properly, can be worn often and with minimal cleaning required, making it very easy to care for and lots of fun to wear.

Although your jewelry is scratch resistant it isn't scratch proof, so we recommend that you store your jewelry so that it isn't rubbing up against other Guidess, like in a loose drawer or jewelry box.   Also, when storing remember that exposing it to air promotes tarnishing, so use the zip lock bags to protect from scratches and tarnish.

Avoid storing your sterling silver jewelry directly on wood surfaces, because wood usually contains acids that can mar the finish.  Oak seems to be the worst for this.  Also, avoid storing your...

LARIMAR, why should I buy this exclusive stone?

Show Guide...

LARIMAR

Larimar is a very rare and unique semiprecious stone (blue pectolite) with different color shades, mostly blue, which can be only found in the mountains of Barahona, in my beautiful contry the Dominican Republic. It is a result of vulcanic activity, which occurred many millions years ago. It's crystalization took place when the volcanic lava was cooling off as columns in the tubular chimneys, in which these pectolites, andesites, basalts and other minerals formed.

The most popular outcrop of Larimar is at "Los chupaderos" about 10 kilometers of the city of Baharona in the south wester region of my country. The first evidences of this mineral appeared in small rollings that were found at beaches of Bahoruco.

But is in 1974 when a member of the United states Peace corp and a Dominican volunteer named Miguel Mendez found the seashore and follow the vestige upstream the Bahoruco river to "Los chupaderos".

However, there is constancy that already in 1916 the parish priest of Barahona, mieguel Domingo Fuentes Loren, had applied to the Treasury Department for the exploration privilege and the explotation of the mine, but it never happened.

This stone received it's name by the Dominican Miguel Mendez, by combining the name of his daughter LARIssa and MAR, the spanish word for sea, whose color the stone resembles. This stone is also called ATLANTIS STONE.

The exquisite blue-green Caribbean waters of the Dominican Republic will concur that this is an appropia...
