17 Crochet and Knitting Tips and Tricks

Whether you knit or crochet with a passion or just occasionally, here are a series of useful tips picked up over a lifetime of crafting that should help most any needleworker.

  • Gauge Check- Mark the end of your knitting needle or crochet hook 1 inch from the end for a quick gauge check.
  • Sticky or Sweaty Hands - Sprinkle a small amount of baby powder on your hands before knitting or crocheting to help the yarn draw smoothly through your fingers and also prevent your hands from perspiring and sticking.
  • Blocking - Do not use an iron on knit or crocheted articles as it can permanently flatten and damage the stitches. Block it instead by gently washing and airdrying as follows. Pin the item out to desired shape and size with rust proof T-pins.Rustproof pins can be very hard to find. Even if you find rust proof pins, the finish may eventually wear off and they will rust. T-pins cost a little more initially but they will keep rust marks from ruining your projects. Let dry. Crochet thread items may be sprayed with spray starch or dipped in a starch solution before being shaped.
  • Casting On - For quick counting of stitches, slip a circular stitch marker onto your knitting needle every 5 or 10 stitches as you cast on and then you just count the markers. Looseleaf binder paper reinforcement tabs make inexpensive and disposable stitch markers, easily removed when no longer needed.
  • Uneven Foundation - The foundation chain and first row of an afghan or other pattern should be made with a hook one size larger than the size needed for th...

FIVE FUN THINGS TO MAKE WITH GRANNY SQUARES

    Show Guide...

There is almost an endless combination of projects that can be created from the basic granny square motif. This guide will offer five ideas for projects that can be made with Granny Squares that either a novice or those more advanced in needlecraft may enjoy. Assembling the squares into finished projects can be just as enjoyable as crocheting the granny squares themselves.

    A Few Supplies:

These projects can be made with a few simple supplies, all of which you can find here on eBay. If you need some Granny Squares to get started with, there are many already made to choose from. Granny Squares The other supplies include finishing yarn, a yarn needle, several crochet hooks and a small pair of scissors. Yarn needles are larger than regular sewing needles and have a large eye and blunt point. They are available in both metal and plastic. Crochet hooks can be either metal or some of the newer acrylic translucent materials. Red Heart brand 'Crystalites' Crystalites are not only colorful but also easy to carry, lighter in weight than metal and the acrylic material glides smoothly through yarn. Yarn manufacturers usually recommend a size G or H hook for working with worsted weight yarn patterns like granny squares.

    Joining Together Granny Squares:

There are basically two methods for joining together finished pieces; one, with crocheted stitching ; or two, making a seam with a yarn needle.

Crochet For Charity - Animals, Babies, Elderly and More

    Show Guide...

    Crochet for Charity

Crochet can create beautiful items to wear, to decorate your home with, to play with or snuggle up with.  Often, crafters share these creations with family and friends.  There is another way to spread joy by doing something you love, crochet for charity!  There are many ways to work locally and globally to share your craft for charity.  Here are some ideas for local and global contributions you can make.

    Hospitals

Local hospitals usually love to receive a variety of items for their patients.  Preemie hats, outfits and booties are almost always gladly received.  Also, small Afghans for pediatric wards are usually gladly accepted.  These warm, snuggly items will bring a ray of home and hope to the sometimes-bleak world of the NICU and special care nurseries.  Children suffering from disease and serious injury can be cheered up and comforted by a soft and cuddly blanket. Also, creating cuddly stuffed animals and small toys for children can be a welcome addition to a pediatric unit.  Cancer units usually also enjoy lapghans, afghans, hats and shawls for patients. These items are appreciated in both adult and child size, for males and females.

    Police and Fire Departments

Police and Fire fighters usually meet people at some of their lowest moments of their lives. Small blankets or crocheted cuddly toys for children can take a terrible situation and make it just a tiny bit more bearable.  Afghans for adults as well can be welcome at times, especially for fire departments. As well, ask about any local fundraisers that the local police and firefighters may be having.  They may appreciate donations of ...

    Crocheting for fun and profit

    Show Guide...

Thank you for taking the time to read this guide. I will attempt to explain some simple techniques about crocheting that will allow you to have a lot of fun, and maybe even make a bit of a profit!

When first starting out to learn the technique of crocheting, it's best to master making the "chain" before going on any further. This is how I've been teaching my children and is how my mom taught me to crochet. If you can't make a good foundation chain, your project will turn out ineffectively! Try to use the same tension throughout the chain making process, as this is how your projects turn out evenly. Once you've mastered the art of "making the chain", you may proceed from there to learn the other stitches.

To make the other stitches, you should follow the stitch guide (usually inside the pattern itself or in the back, depending on the manufacturer of the pattern). It is also helpful, if you are a visual learner, to purchase the DVD or VHS tapes of the art of crocheting. These videos will show you step-by-step the method for various crochet techniques.

What is the MOST important thing about crocheting? To make sure you check your gauge frequently! At the beginning of the pattern, there will be a gauge listing, telling you how many stitches you should have in a particular measurement (usually an inch). If your gauge is wrong, your project will not turn out like it should. This is especially true if you are designing clothing that must fit properly. Be sure that you check your gauge at least every two to three rows to make sure you are on target with the measurements. You should also be crocheting at the same tension throughout your project. Again, failure to do so will result in a skewed project.

Crochet projects can be done in a variety of yarn types. These may include (but are not limited to): baby yarn, fingering yarn, sport yarn, 4 ply y...

    Dodo's Design Crochet Hooks

    Show Guide...

I have purchase 2 hooks from Dodo's Design and they are both wonderful and beautiful in design.  I am not able to use a normal size crochet hook because of my carpel tunnel and arthritis and after purchasing Dodo's Design the weight is wonderful and they seem to be balanced at leased to my hand where I can crocket for hours.   I have purchase a K and an I size and am very happy and pleased about them and once again I can enjoy crocheting..
I totally recommend Dodo's Design.  Hope you will enjoy them as well as I do. Sincerely, Pam K. Vacaville, Ca.

Better Photos can boost sales of Crochet Afghans.

    Show Guide...

Be sure to unfold afghans so the stitches will be viewed more easily and in greater detail. Try to keep the edges straight, being careful not to stretch them too much. Bidders often look for marks of good workmanship. For example: a poorly done afghan will have uneven edges. A full size image of the entire afghan is very helpful too, especially if the afghan has multi-colored stripes. Bidders will be interested in the color scheme, to see if the color coordination is "pleasing to the eye".

    Crochet blankets

    Show Guide...

Remember when you crochet anything that you can alter the pattern to suit what you want.  Blankets can be made larger or smaller, with different borders, or with fringe.  Think about who you are making it for and decide what changes would be necessary.  It is always nice to have a pattern to go by, but if you do not have a pattern and you are good at making one up, then that is what you should do.  It may take some trial and error, but if you like the end results that is all that matters.

If you are new to crocheting a book is helpful, but it is even more helpful for you to see someone actually crocheting.  If you can read patterns that is a plus, if not then there are several links on the internet to help.  Just remember to google crochet.  You can also find some free patterns this way, rather than spending the money on a book to see if you like it, try a free pattern.

    Happy Crocheting.

Collecting Crochet or Knitting Patterns The NEAT Way!

    Show Guide...

I'm a huge collector of online *gems* !

Online gems especially having to do with downloadable crochet patterns and even cooking recipes!
But many a time I end up with leaflets and loose pieces of paper flying around my office or knitting basket.

So I found a way to keep them neat and organized and even at my fingertips -- from now on when you print your favorite recipes or patterns, go to office supply stores and stock up on those clearn plastic page protectors for 3-ring binders, and pick up a nice thick 3 ring binder....

Organize all your favorites into the protects inside the 3 ring binder and voila you can easily find your patterns and recipes right at your fingertips next time!!!

I also found that doing this for big purchases, like tvs, small appliances or electrical household items... is great too --- next time you make a purchase put the manual, receipt, warranty card and everything inside one of the clear sheet protectors and toss it in a seperate binder for your purchases and next time the warranty goes down, or you need to find your manual or receipt for a return, no more shuffling through drawers and cabinets!!!

How to Choose a Crochet Pattern, Based on Skill

    Show Guide...

The fundamental stitches in crochet are chain, single crochet, and double crochet. Once you know these, you can produce a great proportion of the crochet patterns available here at eBay.

The one skill most needed is consistency : mastering the skill of building a garment out of consistent and predictable "gauge." Each stitch must be the same "size" as every other stitch.

Knitting is actually more complex; they have more variations, right up front.  There are guides to converting knitting to crocheting, and vice versa, on line.  Doing that is equivalent to converting a Bflat major to a Cminor in music; practice makes perfect.

What I have done at Needle Patterns is reproduce and reformat traditional patterns I could found from way back when, that our grandmothers utilized--because I'm a more advanced archivist than I am, advanced in crochet skills.

A pattern with less than 15 rounds is considered to be intermediate; one with less than 6 (different) rounds is a beginner's or Girl Scout's starting-out pattern.  If you're a beginning, always ask about the skill level before you purchase your pattern, so you don't bite off more than you can chew.

There are also yahoogroups on-line for crocheters to ask questions.

A steel crochet hook is a tiny investment. Buying and fashioning basic mercerized thread into underwear, comfortable shirts and warm cardigans is a skill that may become essential in the very near future.

The original Golden Hands skills modules, with beautifully illustrated steps are also on-line for your use.  I hope these skills will permit today's women to adapt intelligently to scarcity in the decades to come, while economic insecurity and social chaos make shopping, risky business.
