Reviews & GuidesWARNING About Cross Stitch Charts Sold On EBayThere is an issue which is really starting to make a horrendous impact on the designing industry - copyright infringement. Several sellers on EBay have already been censured, some have had their accounts suspended. IT IS ILLEGAL TO COPY A CHART AND SELL THE COPY. IT IS ILLEGAL TO USE A TRADEMARK OR COPYRIGHTED IMAGE WITHOUT THE OWNER'S PERMISSION. Period. If you are a buyer who has bid on or purchased a chart only to find that it is a copy of the original chart once it is received, you can take the following steps: 1. Contact EBay's Copyright Department IMMEDIATELY. If you paid for your purchase through PayPal, file a claim through them as well. If you get no results through PayPal or EBay, contact your credit card company and file a dispute. 2. Contact the original designer or publisher of the chart in question and lte them know you were sold an illegal copy of one of their designs; gather as much information about the seller as possible to forward to the owner of the copyrighted work. If you are a buyer who has bid on or purchased a chart which is an illegal porttrayal of a copyrighted work (Disney items, Warner Bros, Looney Tunes, etc...), you can contact the owner of the copyrighted image directly to pass the information about the seller on to them. Cut Clutter! Selling Magazines on ebayYes, we all have good itentions. I will read that article later. I will try that receipe next week. This paper mache pumpkin will be great for Halloween. I stockpile magazines. First, I probably subscribe to too many magazines. Second, sometimes my schedule is too busy to truly digest each issue. So...how am I simplifying my life and making a little cash on the side? I have posted all of my VALUABLE magazines on eBay. Why sell magazines? (1) They are cluttering your home. (2) Goodwill doesn't take them for donations. (3) You are honestly never going to make that Little Mermaid Halloween costume. Look, Little Mermaid is old news anyway! (4) Someone else may enjoy your magazines! (5) You can sell the mags for cash and use the money for bookshelves and organizers as I plan to do!!! (Write me later and make sure I did not use the money for a new subscription to Metalsmith!) To Sell or Not to Sell! Things to sell: craft magazine, hobby magazines, literary magazines! Materials that are not dated! Also, every one and her mother gets Good Housekeeping so don't bother listing it. Same for Better Homes and Gardens, Southern Living, Martha Stewart, etc. Quality: This is where I owe my mother for instilling in me the thought that everything must be kept perfect! No torn pages, no ruffled edges, no dogged earred pages either! Gosh, who does dog ears! Get a bookmark! ... Antique Needlework SamplersPurchasing antique needlework on Ebay can be fun and exciting. If you're just looking for something that pleases you, you'll have an easy time by merely looking at the photos and reading well-written descriptions. However, if you're a true sampler collector or are purchasing to resell or for investment purposes, there are some things to watch for and some things to watch out for. First, make sure the stitching is done on linen (not Aida). Aida cloth was invented in the 20th century, and therefore is not considered truly antique. Second, be mindful of holes and stains. Holes and stains are generally okay and can add to the overall beauty of the item, but as you probably have guessed, they normally bring down the price of the sampler. Finally, you might ask to see the stitching on the back of the item, as the neatness of the back can be an indication of the neatness and experience of the stitcher and thus the quality of the stitching. But you should always be reminded that decorators say to only hang what you love on your walls, so if it pleases you, ask questions first and then bid if you are satisfied. Photocopying patterns for sale is illegal I am bothered by seeing so many listings for photocopied patterns. Copyright laws allow the buyer of the pattern to make a photocopy for his own personal use only, in order to write or mark it without destroying the original pattern. You cannot make a copy for a friend, and you definitely cannot make multiple copies and sell them. This is stealing from the author of the pattern. Even vintage patterns cannot be copied without permission from the original copyright owner. There may be a few old patterns out there that were not copyrighted, and they would be called public domain, but those are few and far between. A designer owns the patterns that he or she creates, the same as a book or movie. It is not fair for someone who had nothing to do with the creative process at all to copy and make money off them. If you find someone selling photocopies, report them to e-bay, as it is strictly against e-bay policy. Do not buy them. And if you order patterns and receive photocopies, report that too, for you have been ripped off. Another thing I see that is very similar is for Cross-stitch patterns that have been computer generated from a scanned picture. Usually these pictures are not the original work of the seller, merely pictures from books or magazines. Again this is a copyright violation. You cannot scan a picture, photo, drawing, painting, or poster, and make a pattern out of it, unless you own the copyright for that item. You cannot capture a picture from a video and make a pattern from it either. Please, we must respect our creative individuals and give them credit for their work. They work hard to create the artwork that fills our lives with beauty, and they deserve any money that is made from their work. Do not steal their pictur... Cross Stitching Pieces of PeaceFirst, you absolutely MUST choose a design that tugs at your heart and invokes some kind of serious emotion, such as, "Oh my gosh, this is the cutest blah blah blah I have ever seen!" or "This would be absolutely PERFECT in my (fill in the blank) room." With having said this, please note, I did not say "so and so would love this," or "this will be the perfect gift." If you want to create a hobby, you need to give to yourself first, then spread your joy, creativity, and love to others. So basically, make a project you intend to keep for YOU! My purpose behind this is that if you see your project every day, you will become even more fond of it and want to stitch more (again and again and again). Second, and this is where it gets tricky, keep your first stitching piece small. Most often times the items that tug at our heart the most are large pieces, with intricate work, detail, and countless hours spent stitching. Unless you ALWAYS (and I mean ALWAYS) finish a project, don't subject yourself to that. Give in to a little more instant gratification and maybe find a small saying to stitch, or some small handmade ornaments for a perfectly trimmed tree, or a book mark, or initial pillow. (As a side note, remember that a 4" square item that is stitched solid might take quite a bit longer than a bit larger "Welcome" piece that entails mostly backstitching. See, this is why I said it was tricky) Work your way up to that to-die-for take-f... Finding the Perfect Cross Stitch Pattern On EBayFinding the Perfect Cross Stitch Pattern on EBay With the countless number of choices that are available on eBay, it is hard to find the perfect cross-stitch pattern for a project. A few simple steps can help you reduce the number of hits and increase the possibility of finding the right charts. First, identify exactly what you want. Some Examples are: A rubber duck motif for a baby bib; A Christmas Elf creating toys for girls and boys; Country rag dolls; etc. etc. etc. Write down as many keywords as possible to define the cross-stitch pattern you desire. If you desire a certain pattern creator or company, be sure to include that in your keywords. The most common keyword for finding a cross-stitch chart is "pattern" and in some occasions, cross-stitch is shortened to "XS". Start with the top two to three keywords or phrases. If they are very specific, do a search for both title and description. If the keywords and phrases from your list are more general, stay to the title search. If that search brings too many hits, add one more of your keywords. Scan the results that your search comes back up with. Any titles with keywords that strike you as most appropriate look at that result. With any luck, the streamlining of keywords will have reduced the number of results and allow you to find the perfect pattern. If the first set does not find the perfect pattern, try new combinations of your keywords until that pattern is found. Happy Searching! To simplify your searching even more, try starting your search at Creative Spirit Creations. We have hundreds of crafting items, including a very large selection of cross-stitch patterns. This book was published in 1986 and the information has not changed with time. If you want to learn to do all those beautiful stitches then this is the book to use. There are over 700 unique full color step by step photos. This is very important to have the step by step photos as these stitches can be very confusing. I had checked this book out of the library and I had to own one so I went to E-Bay and found a copy. I want to make a Crazy Quilt and you need to know how to do all of the fancy stitches. If you are doing a stitchery project these are so helpful to understand the stitch and the diagrams in the kits are not always useful. I hope that you have found this useful. As summer winds down, people are beginning to spend more time indoors. Couch potato time can be well spent and productive by creating one of a kind hand crafted gifts. Counted cross stitch is simple and fun. I have seen stitchers in the age range from 7 to 87. Counted cross stitch is a peaceful retreat from a hectic life. Best of all, it requires little room and minimal supplies. As you purchase supplies, make sure to match the fabric to the size of the finished piece you would like. Also, keep in mind that very young and older eyes can see the holes better in the lower count fabrics, such as 11 and 14. Start with a small project, such as a bookmark with your initials, to make you feel like you have accomplished something. As you show it off, you will feel pleased and begin to crave more. |
