Hair Combs of the Art Deco Period : part 1 (Transition)

Show Guide...

Origins and Influences of Art Deco.

This series of guides will deal with decorative hair combs of the Art Deco period which spans the years from approximately 1910 to 1940.

These ornaments are some of the most spectacular and beautiful that collectors will come across. They range from huge lacy mantilla style combs, which were popular early in the period, to the pretty little rhinestone comb clips and barrettes of the late 1930s. These latter are still very wearable with today?s fashions for smart dressy occasions such as proms and parties.

This first guide traces the origins of the Art Deco style and its evolution from the previous design movement, known as Art Nouveau.

How Art Deco Got Its Name

An essentially decorative style of the years following the First World War, Art Deco reached its peak in 1925 at the Exposition des Art Decoratifs et Industrielles Modernes in Paris, from which the name is derived.

In popular imagination, Art Deco belongs to a world of luxury and decadence, the golden age of the 1920s and 1930s. The very term conjures up a multitude of romantic images; huge ocean liners gliding effortlessly across moonlit seas and the sound of clinking cocktail glasses. Yet despite this emphasis on luxury, Art Deco emerged in an era of economic slumps, industrial depressions and social strife. It was against this troubled and traumatic background that Art Deco evolved.

Art Deco was e...

The Fashion Background.

In this guide I will be looking at the hair accessories which were popular in the 1970s.

It is not easy to define 1970s fashion. From its early romantic hippy ethos to its later angry punk look, 70s fashion was a time of rapid development of new styles.  An underrated era in terms of style, 70s fashion is being appreciated more and more with each passing year!

In the early part of the decade, 70s fashion was a continuation of the popular hippy look of the 1960s. However, although the hippy look retained its early romantic style and its fascination with exotic fashion items such as clothes made from Indian fabrics, it was moving away from its 1960s origins.

On the higher end of early 70s fashion was the development of romantic fashions created by designers such as Yves St Laurent, Ossie Clark, and Zandra Rhodes.  As the 1970s continued, people began to dress in flashier styles that showed off their bodies. The mini skirt shortened to the micro-skirt. This new emphasis on design and classy hedonism would really take root in the emergence of disco fashion in the late 70s.

Disco fashion has been popularized in movies such as the John Travolta hit, Saturday Night Fever.  Associated with the pumping drive of disco music and infamous party spots like Club 54 in New York, disco fashion is one of the most enduring remains of 70s fashion.

One of the biggest impacts of disco fashion in late 70s fashion is how it directly inspired a new fashion movement that many fashion experts feel is one of the most influential parts of 70s fashion. The punk fashion style developed as an angry response to the carefree attitude of disco fashion.  Arty rather than sophisticated, punk fashion was not overly widespread during the 1970s.  However, in future decades, p...

Retro Combs and Hair Accessories 1980-1990 Part II

The Return of Glamour.

After becoming somewhat subdued and conservative in the 1970s the costume jewellery industry again flourished in the 1980s. A number of important influences combined to give women a new freedom and confidence to wear frankly fake fashion jewellery. In fact, the bigger and glitzier the better!

In this respect, several important influences which contributed to the popular taste can be identified.

  1. The ?Real Jewellery? Look: inspired by Diana Princess of Wales.
  2. Nostalgic Historical Revivals: imitation of historical periods.
  3. Frankly Fake: inspired by the glitz and glamour of TV shows like Dallas and Dynasty and the influence of celebrities like Madonna
  4. Resurgence of Plastic Jewellery: novelty themes and treatments such as prints, animal patterns, and so on.
Part II will examine the influence of the ?Dallasty? phenomenon and the resurgence of novelty styles in plastic jewellery and hair accessories.

Frankly Fake.

Unlike previous generations when rhinestone jewellery had been more favoured by mature women, the craze was for bright and glittery jewellery was followed by teenagers and older women alike in the 1980s. Previous rules about what was considered appropriate wear for particular occasions were discarded. Rhinestones came to be worn on every possible occasion, not just in the evening.

The ?Dallasty? Phenomenon.

In the USA glamour came in the far reaching influence of Television shows like Dallas and

How to Naturally prevent and TREAT Head Lice Part 2of2

Show Guide...

Hopefully you all read my first guide about lice. It was how best to prevent lice. However, there are times when they just can not be prevented. My following steps are for everyone especially people with long hair that can not be brushed without conditioner.

As I said previously - you are not allowed to use conditioner when you use the pharmacy grade lice pesticides for 3 days after you treat your hair, at this time it is suggested that you treat your hair again for extra precaution. Anyone with long hair knows that it is IMPOSSIBLE to brush your hair without conditioner.

So my solution is simple. All you need is the "Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Conditioner" a nit comb, and saran wrap. You are going to want to do this on a day when you will not be leaving the house- unless you are really brave. You can get the nit comb at your local pharmacy.
1. With your hair dry, cover your hair with the conditioner. Lots of conditioner, like the majority of the bottle. This will drown the lice. Get really close to your scalp and make sure that your head is white with the conditioner.
2. Wrap your head with saran wrap to help keep the mess somewhat sustained to just yourself. I wrap a towel around my head now so my family laughs at me less.
3. Keep the wrap and conditioner on for the day. As long as you can. At least 8-12 hours. More if possible if you are just hanging around the house anyways.
4. Have a shower. Rinse out all of the conditioner .
5. Use the nit comb to comb your hair, it will be very easy seeing as your hair has super moisture from the day long conditioning treatment.

Voila! You should be (with no guarantees) pretty much lice free. If you check in 3 - 5 days and it is still there, then repeat and keep them drowning for longer.

Hope this helps those unfortunate people who have lice, and if you want to prevent it, read my other guide.
